For years, Google Ads has been one of the most powerful ways for businesses to reach customers online.

A person searches for something. Businesses bid for that search. The advertisement appears. The customer clicks, visits the website and hopefully becomes a lead or customer.

Simple.

But the way people search is changing.

Instead of typing:

“best web designer Nagpur”

people can now ask an AI assistant:

“I run a small business in Nagpur and need a professional website with WhatsApp enquiries, SEO and online payments. Which type of website should I get and who can build it?”

That is a completely different kind of search.

And it could change digital advertising.

From Keywords to Conversations

Google revolutionised advertising by connecting businesses with search intent.

If someone searches for “buy running shoes,” there is a fairly obvious commercial intent.

AI assistants take that concept several steps further.

A user can explain what they want, provide their budget, describe their problem and ask for recommendations — all in one conversation.

Instead of advertising against three or four keywords, businesses could eventually compete to become relevant to an entire customer need.

This is why AI advertising is worth watching.

OpenAI has already introduced advertising in ChatGPT, with an Ads Manager that allows businesses to create and manage campaigns. OpenAI says its advertising system is designed around the context and intent of conversations rather than simply traditional keyword searches.

That doesn’t mean Google Ads is going away.

Far from it.

But a new advertising channel is emerging.

The Difference Between Google and AI Search

Imagine two customers.

Customer A — Google

“Website designer Nagpur”

They receive search results and advertisements.

They click several websites, compare prices and services, and eventually contact somebody.

Customer B — AI Assistant

“I’m starting a manufacturing business in Nagpur. I need a 6-page website, product catalogue, WhatsApp integration and an enquiry form. My budget is ₹40,000–₹60,000. What should I look for in a web developer?”

The second customer has already revealed:

  • Location
  • Industry
  • Requirement
  • Budget
  • Website size
  • Desired features
  • Purchase intent

That’s incredibly valuable information.

And it illustrates why advertising inside AI-driven experiences could become so powerful.

The Next Battle May Not Be for Keywords

For years, businesses have asked:

“What keywords should I rank for?”

The AI era may force businesses to ask:

“What questions should my business be the answer to?”

That’s a major shift.

A property company shouldn’t only target:

“flats for sale Nagpur”

It should also think about questions such as:

“Where should I buy a 2BHK in Nagpur if I work near MIHAN?”

A digital marketing agency shouldn’t only target:

“digital marketing agency Nagpur”

It should create content answering:

“How much should a small business spend on digital marketing?”

A web development company shouldn’t only target:

“website developer Nagpur”

It should answer:

“How much does a professional business website cost in Nagpur?”

These questions can become valuable content opportunities.

AI Advertising Is Not the Same as AI Search Visibility

This distinction is important.

There are actually two opportunities emerging.

1. Paid AI Advertising

Where an AI platform offers advertising, businesses can pay to promote their products or services.

ChatGPT is already moving in this direction.

2. Organic AI Visibility

The second opportunity is earning visibility without directly paying for an advertisement.

Imagine somebody asks:

“Who are some good website developers in Nagpur?”

And an AI assistant mentions your company.

That’s potentially the AI equivalent of appearing on the first page of Google.

This emerging field is often described as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or AI Search Optimization.

And businesses are only beginning to understand it.

What About Claude?

This is where businesses need to avoid oversimplifying the trend.

Not every AI company is going to follow OpenAI’s advertising model.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has said that Claude will remain ad-free.

So the future isn’t necessarily going to be:

Google Ads → ChatGPT Ads → Claude Ads

Instead, we’re likely to see different AI platforms adopt different business models.

Some may offer advertising.

Some may rely on subscriptions.

Some may facilitate transactions or commerce.

Others may remain ad-free.

The bigger opportunity is therefore not simply “advertise on AI.”

It is:

“Make your business visible wherever customers use AI to make decisions.”

Who Should Pay Attention?

Almost every business that gets customers through online discovery should at least understand what is happening.

But some sectors could be particularly interesting.

Real Estate

A customer can ask:

“Find residential areas in Nagpur with good schools, reasonable property prices and access to major employment hubs.”

That’s much more sophisticated than a traditional property search.

E-commerce

Instead of browsing dozens of products:

“I need a laptop under ₹70,000 for video editing and gaming. What should I buy?”

The AI can help narrow the decision.

Professional Services

Lawyers, accountants, consultants, architects, designers and agencies can benefit when customers use AI to research service providers.

Local Businesses

Restaurants, hotels, clinics, gyms, salons and other local businesses could eventually benefit from AI-driven recommendations and discovery.

What Should Businesses Do Now?

The good news is that you don’t need to completely abandon your existing digital marketing strategy.

In fact, you shouldn’t.

Start with the basics.

Build a Strong Website

Your website should clearly tell both customers and search engines:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • Where you operate
  • Who you serve
  • What you offer
  • How customers can contact you

Create Useful Content

Answer the questions customers actually ask.

Not 1,000-word articles stuffed with keywords.

Real questions.

Real answers.

Real expertise.

Build Your Online Reputation

AI systems need reliable information to understand businesses.

Your website isn’t the only source.

Your business presence across relevant directories, reviews, publications, social platforms and other websites can all contribute to your overall digital footprint.

Think Beyond Google

Continue investing in Google SEO and Google Ads.

But start asking another question:

If someone asked an AI assistant about my industry, would my business have enough credible information online to be considered?

If the answer is no, there’s work to do.

Should Small Businesses Start Advertising on ChatGPT?

If you’re eligible for the platform and your customers are likely to use AI for research, testing it could make sense.

But don’t take your entire Google Ads budget and move it overnight.

Start small.

Run a controlled campaign.

Track:

Cost → Clicks → Leads → Customers → Revenue

Then compare the results with your existing advertising channels.

The businesses that experiment early will learn much faster than those that wait until AI advertising becomes crowded.

Is This Really the “Next Google Ads”?

Nobody can honestly guarantee that.

Google has an enormous advertising ecosystem and isn’t disappearing.

But something important is happening.

The internet is moving from:

Search → Click → Website

towards:

Question → Conversation → Recommendation → Decision

If that shift continues, advertising will inevitably evolve with it.

And businesses that understand AI discovery, AI search optimisation and AI advertising early could have an advantage.

The Question Every Business Owner Should Ask

For the last 20 years, businesses have asked:

“How do I rank on Google?”

The next generation of businesses may ask:

“How do I become the business AI recommends?”

That’s the opportunity.

And it’s starting now.
